The Arabian: The World's Oldest Breed

The Arabian is widely regarded as the oldest and most influential horse breed in the world. Shaped over millennia by the Bedouin of the Arabian Peninsula, who bred for endurance, soundness and loyalty in harsh desert conditions, the Arabian has left its mark on almost every modern breed, from the Thoroughbred to countless warmbloods. Arabians typically stand between 1,45 and 1,55 m, compact and refined, with a short back, strong bone and fine, elastic movement. Bays, greys and chestnuts are common. That sensitivity means Arabians reward calm, consistent riders, but their willingness and stamina make them rewarding partners for the long term.

Endurance is the discipline the Arabian dominates like no other; its natural stamina, efficient metabolism and soundness make it the breed of choice for long-distance competition worldwide. Beyond endurance, Arabians shine in showing (halter and ridden classes), and they perform well in dressage, leisure and trail riding. Purpose-bred sport lines also compete in flat racing.

Prices vary widely with age, training, bloodlines and discipline. As an indicative range, a young or leisure-level Arabian typically sells for around 4.000–10.000 €. Horses with confirmed endurance or show training generally sit between 12.000 € and 30.000 €, while top show or proven endurance horses with elite pedigrees can go far beyond that. Treat these as orientation figures, not fixed prices.

Buying Advice

Before buying an Arabian, check three things. First, the papers: confirm the horse is registered with a WAHO-recognised studbook, check the pedigree carefully and verify the microchip matches. Second, the veterinary side: a full pre-purchase exam with X-rays is standard, and for endurance prospects it is worth assessing legs, feet and metabolic fitness in detail. Third, see the horse ridden — ideally over distance if endurance is your goal — and ride it yourself more than once, as a video is never a substitute. Buying abroad? Budget for transport and a trusted agent or translator for the sales contract.
