The Appaloosa: America's Spotted Horse

The Appaloosa is instantly recognisable for its spotted coat, and it carries one of the most distinctive histories in the horse world. The breed was developed by the Nez Perce people of the north-western United States, who selectively bred hardy, colourful and versatile horses. After the breed nearly disappeared in the late 19th century, enthusiasts founded the Appaloosa Horse Club (ApHC) in 1938, today the official registry and one of the largest breed associations in the world.
