The Lipizzaner: The Classical Horse of Central Europe

Few breeds are as intimately bound to the art of classical dressage as the Lipizzaner. The breed traces its origins to 1580, when Archduke Charles II of Austria founded the imperial stud at Lipica, in what is today Slovenia, crossing Spanish, Italian and later Arabian and Kladruber blood to produce a compact, powerful horse for the Habsburg court. It is the Lipizzaner that performs the famous airs above the ground at the Spanish Riding School of Vienna, where the tradition of haute école has been preserved almost unchanged for over four centuries.
