The Trakehner: The Most Refined of Warmbloods
The Trakehner is widely regarded as the most refined and noble of the German warmbloods. It takes its name from the main stud of Trakehnen, founded in 1732 in East Prussia by King Frederick William I. Bred to produce elegant, durable cavalry and carriage horses, the Trakehner is uniquely a closed studbook that permits only Trakehner, Thoroughbred and Arabian blood, preserving its refinement. After the dramatic westward flight of 1945, the breed was rebuilt in the West and is today registered by the Trakehner Verband.

Standing typically between 160 and 170 cm, the Trakehner is lighter and more refined than most warmbloods, with a rectangular frame, expressive head, well-set neck and floating, elastic gaits.
