The Andalusian: Spain's Baroque Horse
The Andalusian is one of Europe's most recognisable breeds, an ancient Iberian horse shaped in Andalusia over centuries and long associated with the mounted traditions of the Spanish court and cavalry. In its purest form the breed is registered as the Pura Raza Española (PRE) under ANCCE, the official Spanish studbook — so "Andalusian" and "PRE" often describe the same horse, though the international term is used more loosely and some registries record Andalusian-type horses without full PRE papers. Understanding that distinction matters when you buy.
Temperament and Type
Andalusians typically stand between 1,55 and 1,68 m. They are compact and strongly built, with an arched neck, abundant mane and tail, a convex or straight profile and elevated, cadenced movement. Greys and bays dominate. The character is a large part of the appeal: intelligent, sensitive and generous, these horses tend to stay level-headed under pressure, which makes them as suitable for amateur riders as for professionals.
Where the Andalusian Excels
Dressage is the breed's natural home. A gift for collection makes piaffe, passage and lateral work come more easily than in many warmbloods, and Andalusian and PRE horses now compete internationally up to Grand Prix. The breed also dominates working equitation, shines in classical high-school and doma vaquera, and is a favourite for baroque exhibition and leisure riding across Europe.
What Does an Andalusian Cost in Europe?
Prices vary widely with age, training and bloodlines. As an indicative range, a sound leisure or amateur Andalusian usually sells for around 6.000–15.000 €. Horses with confirmed sport training or competition results generally sit between 20.000 € and 50.000 €, while top dressage prospects and proven Grand Prix horses can go well beyond that. Treat these as orientation figures, not fixed prices.
Buying Advice
Before buying an Andalusian, check three things. First, the papers: confirm whether the horse is a registered PRE with an ANCCE Carta de Registro, or an Andalusian-type without full papers, and verify the microchip matches. Second, the veterinary side: a full pre-purchase exam with X-rays is standard practice at this price level. Third, see the horse ridden and ride it yourself more than once — a video is never a substitute. Buying abroad? Budget for transport and a trusted agent or translator for the sales contract.
