The Morgan: America's First Breed

The Morgan holds a special place in equine history as one of the earliest breeds developed in the United States. The entire breed descends from a single prepotent stallion named Figure, born around 1789 and later known by the name of his owner, Justin Morgan, a Vermont schoolteacher. Small but astonishingly strong, Figure could out-pull, out-trot and out-walk larger horses, and passed his qualities so reliably to his offspring that a distinct breed emerged. The American Morgan Horse Association, founded in 1909, maintains the studbook today, making the Morgan a truly foundational American breed with a well-documented lineage.

Temperament and Type

The Morgan is compact and refined, typically standing 142–155 cm, with an expressive head, a proudly arched neck, a short strong back and clean, sturdy legs. Bay, black and chestnut are the classic colours. What most defines the breed, however, is its character: Morgans are people-oriented, intelligent, eager and remarkably level-headed. They are known for their willingness and their calm courage, which makes them a favourite for riders of all ages and abilities.

Where the Morgan Excels

Versatility is the Morgan's greatest strength. The breed excels in the show ring in both English and Western disciplines, and is a natural driving horse, competing successfully in pleasure and combined driving. Morgans are also popular for trail and endurance riding, dressage, ranch work and as all-round family horses. Their stamina and sound feet make them dependable partners across a wide range of activities rather than specialists in a single sport.

How Much Does a Morgan Cost in Europe?

The Morgan is relatively rare in Europe, which affects availability and price. A young or unbroken Morgan typically sells for 4.000 € to 9.000 €. A well-started riding or driving horse usually falls between 9.000 € and 18.000 €. Proven show, dressage or driving horses from quality bloodlines command 18.000 € to 30.000 € or more, with imported American lines often at the upper end.

Practical Buying Advice

Because the breed is uncommon in Europe, verify registration with the American Morgan Horse Association or a recognised European Morgan registry and check the pedigree carefully. Ask about temperament and prior use, as Morgans are often trained across several disciplines. Always arrange an independent pre-purchase veterinary examination, and where a horse has been imported, confirm passport and health documentation are complete.
